The Singleton of Dufftown Tailfire
In 2014, Diageo expanded The Singleton of Dufftown portfolio by introducing Tailfire and Sunray, a pair of no-age-statement (NAS) single malt Scotch whiskies.
Diageo purposefully designed both expressions to attract younger consumers. To achieve this, the company utilized targeted cask selection—maturescent styling that highlighted distinct flavour profiles rather than traditional age statements. Specifically, the blending team aged Tailfire primarily in European oak Sherry casks to draw out vibrant red berry and vanilla notes, while finishing Sunray in toasted Bourbon casks to impart a honeyed sweetness.
Despite this strategic push into flavour-led marketing, Diageo discontinued both expressions just four years later in 2018, replacing them with The Singleton Malt Master’s Selection as part of a wider global brand refresh
- Nose: Fresh, crisp apple, red grape, raspberry, candied orange peel. Vanilla sweetness, hay, wild strawberries. Hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and fresh-cut grass. Fruity Christmas cake with marzipan.
- Palate: Spicy berry fruitiness, buttery vanilla, nutty wood. Oats, pepper, chocolate-covered cherries, stewed plums. Malt, sweet orange, and fig notes.
- Finish: Drying and hot with fruitiness. Spicy oak, bitter lemon, and lingering malty biscuits.
ABV: 40%
