Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition 2022
The Diageo Distillers Edition is a prestigious range of single malt Scotch whiskies that undergo a double-maturation (or “finishing”) process to add depth and complexity to their standard “Classic Malts” range. Launched in 1997, this annual series takes well-known whiskies, matures them in traditional casks, and then finishes them in specially selected fortified wine casks for several months to a year.
Nose:
Lightly heathery and sweetly honeyed, the aroma is beautifully introduced by a nutty-fruity waft of Oloroso. Tropical fruit notes of banana and pineapple give it a really appealing character, further developed by hints of fresh apricots, walnuts, and a little wood spice.
Palate:
Creamy-smooth and coating, flowing lightly over the tongue. The taste is honey sweet, yet soon buzzes with warming nutmeg and pepperspice which nicely balance exotic, fruity hints of grape, peach and apricot.
Finish:
Quite long, attractively sweet and malty yet also clean and with plenty of white pepper spiciness. Elegantly drying, vanilla-rich oak-spice lingers in the aftertaste.
- Lagavulin (Islay): Finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Known for heavy peat, this expression adds notes of raisins, figs, and chocolate.
- Talisker (Isle of Skye): Finished in Amoroso sherry casks. Adds plum and caramel sweetness to the classic salty, peppery, and peated profile.
- Oban (Highlands): Finished in Montilla Fino sherry casks. Brings dry, nutty, and almond notes to the lightly peated, citrusy style.
- Cragganmore (Speyside): Finished in Port casks. Enhances the complex, fruity, and elegant style with notes of dark berries and tannins.
- Dalwhinnie (Highlands): Finished in Oloroso sherry casks. Adds warm, spicy notes of nuts and raisins to the smooth, honeyed, and floral spirit.
- Glenkinchie (Lowlands): Finished in Amontillado sherry casks. Adds a dry, nutty character to the light, grassy, and floral Lowland whisky.
