Wolfburn bottles its 416 Small Batch 10-year-old single malt Scotch whisky at 46% vol. To achieve its rich profile, the distillers fully matured the liquid in first-fill ruby port pipes sourced from a vineyard in Portugal’s Douro Valley, which stands as one of the world’s oldest protected wine regions. Notably, this release marks the first age-stated expression in the Wolfburn Small Batch Series. Because the distillery produced just 3,900 bottles with no second run planned, this bottle truly earns every word of its description if you are looking for a limited-edition port-cask Scotch whisky.
Although Wolfburn is still a young distillery, the original founders first established it in 1821 in Thurso, on Scotland’s far north coast. Eventually, production ceased in the 1850s, but a new team started Wolfburn’s modern distillery in 2012 very close to the old site. Following this revival, production started in 2013, which allowed them to launch their inaugural expression in February 2016.
Today, they continue to make their whisky the same way craftsmen always made it: by hand, using only the finest ingredients, and without haste. Furthermore, the team distils, matures, and bottles Wolfburn’s whisky entirely on-site.
- Nose: Warm ruby port aromas drift alongside a delicate whisper of sea salt. Dried fruits slowly emerge – raisins, dark cherries and sultanas, in a deeply vinous embrace that hints at the extraordinary casks at work.
- Palate: Luscious caramel and smooth vanilla arrive first, underpinned by beautiful wine-soaked flavours. Darker notes follow, gentle oak smoke and the rich sweetness of dates and figs with a supple, full-bodied texture and outstanding depth of flavour.
- Finish: Long and warming. Caramel and dried fruits linger with quiet confidence, while those signature ruby port notes weave through to the very end.
