Drambuie Malt Whisky Liqueur 5cl
The Scots Gaelic phrase “An Dram Buidheach” gives the liqueur its name, translating directly to “the drink that satisfies”. Industry experts track its lineage back to 1745, when the elixir served as the personal recipe of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, famously known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. Following his historic defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the prince fled to the Isle of Skye. To reward the MacKinnon chief for securing his safe passage home, the prince gifted him his secret formulation.
The family preserved the secret for generations until James Ross adapted the recipe using Scotch whisky to sell at his Skye hotel. Following Ross’s death, the recipe transferred back to another branch of the MacKinnon family, who initiated commercial production in Edinburgh in 1909.
Today, global spirits authority William Grant & Sons Distillers Ltd owns the legendary brand.
- Neat or On the Rocks: Pour a single measure over fresh ice in a rocks glass to enjoy it as a traditional after-dinner digestif.
- The Rusty Nail: Build this mid-20th-century classic by stirring two parts Scotch whisky with one part Drambuie over ice, finishing with a lemon twist.
- The Coffee Crème Cocktail: Mix 30ml Drambuie, 20ml Scotch whisky, 20ml fresh espresso, and 10ml brown Crème de Cacao with ice, then gently float 15ml single cream on top.
- Nose: An understated aroma of aromatised and sweetened whisky. Surprisingly light and fresh with aromas of cut grass, corn, cherry and citrus balanced with a smidgeon of peat. Honeyed heather sits quietly in the background alongside some subtle spice.
- Taste: Soft and creamy with sweet fruit nuances. It presents a velvety mouthfeel featuring complex, warming, and soft malt notes.
- Finish: Long and generous with fine, spicy notes.
