Balvenie 12 Year Old Doublewood Early 2000s
The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood from the early 2000s (approx. 2000–2005) is a highly regarded, classic Speyside single malt, often considered superior in depth to more modern bottlings. It was matured in traditional American ex-Bourbon oak casks, followed by a finishing period in first-fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts. This results in a rich, mellow flavour of great depth and unusual complexity.
DoubleWood 12-year-old was launched by the Balvenie distillery’s Master Distiller, David C Stewart in 1993. It used a ground-breaking, process designed by him in 1982, now commonly known as ‘wood finishing’. The expression was said to rival Glenmorangie and their Portwood release as the earliest and most successful of the new wave of wine-finished single malt whiskies.
