Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood Early 2000s
The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood from the early 2000s (approx. 2000–2005) is a highly regarded, classic Speyside single malt. Many whisky enthusiasts considered it superior in depth to more modern bottlings. The production process involves maturing the spirit in traditional American ex-Bourbon oak casks, before finishing it in first-fill European oak Oloroso sherry butts. This technique creates a rich, mellow flavour of great depth and unusual complexity.
The Balvenie distillery’s Master Distiller, David C. Stewart, launched DoubleWood 12-Year-Old in 1993. He used a ground-breaking process he designed in 1982, which the industry now commonly calls ‘wood finishing’. This expression rivalled Glenmorangie’s Port Wood release as one of the earliest and most successful of the new wave of wine-finished single malt whiskies.
