Ardbeg launched the Ardbeg Heavy Vapours General Release in May 2023 for Ardbeg Day as the widely available, standard-proof counterpart to the Committee Release. The distillery crafted this expression using the exact same experimental liquid—distilled completely without the spirit still’s purifier—but dialled it back for a broader audience.
It is said that the merest whiff of classic Ardbeg transports you to another time and place. However, the aroma of this formidable smoky malt takes you to another dimension altogether. For it answers the improbable question: how would Ardbeg be without the pivotal influence of its legendary purifier?
Ardbeg wash distilled without the purifier and matured in classic bourbon casks makes this dram is the most FULL BLOWN Ardbeg ever. pungent earthiness fills the lungs. Aromatic clouds of darkest chocolate and sharp peppermint ascend. Aniseed and powdery cinnamon billow, while the tang of menthol lingers.
Official Distillery Tasting Notes
Nose: Intense, pungent & aromatic, with a distinctive farmyard aroma, along with a crunchy aroma, like creosote or tarry rope. The smoke is all dominating, but has a slightly sweet edge to it, almost like dark chocolate. A splash of water opens the bouquet, with some dark chocolate cream, and a hint of smoked artichoke.
Taste: The mouthfeel is warming, with an initial burst of bittersweet flavours coal dust, cardamon, peppermint, eucalyptus, and more dark chocolate with some coffee grits. In the background there are some old fashioned boiled sweets, like aniseed twists, cinnamon balls, and antiseptic lozenges.
Finish: The aftertaste lingers long and bold with an ongoing, almost anaesthetising sensation.
