Kilkerran 16 Year Old is a relatively recent addition to the Glengyle Distllery’s range. The distillery was only brought back to life in 2004 after 79 years of silence, and is now finally old enough to release this excellent limited run 16 year old. The distillery only produces for three months of the year and turns out approximate 650 casks annually across its entire range. It’s therefore easy to see how hard it can be to get one of these bottles. It does not even feature for sale within their own online shop. This is a 2022 (3rd) edition of their 16 year old, aged in 70% bourbon, 30% sherry casks. Unlike most ranges the Kilkerran 16 Year old is produced using different cask variations each year giving different tasting profiles.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose – A citrus element familiar to Kilkerran kicks off this dram in notes of oranges and opal fruits. Notes of turkish delight, foam bananas and strawberry laces develop, along with a malty, cereal note.
Palate – Sweet on the palate with a soft hint of peat smoke, there are notes of pear drops, sherbet, toffee apples, toasted marshmallows, and an orange note carried through from the nose.
Finish – A dry finish with notes of liquorice, peppermint and peat smoke.
