Desmond E. Williams launched Irish Mist in 1947, marking it as the first commercial liqueur in Irish history. As the grandson of the Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey founder, Williams designed this sweetened spirit to rescue struggling whiskey sales. The company strategically blended excess whiskey stocks with honey and herbs, capturing a massive international audience.
The brand’s marketing relied heavily on romantic Irish folklore. Williams promoted Irish Mist as a “Legendary Liqueur” based on a lost, 1,000-year-old recipe for “heather wine”—an aromatic beverage that ancient Irish chieftains once favoured. Company lore claimed that the recipe vanished in 1691 during the historical emigration known as the “Flight of the Wild Geese.” Centuries later, the secret supposedly resurfaced inside an old manuscript, allowing the Williams family to revive the ancient elixir for the modern world.
The “65 Proof” marking and “fluid ounces” date this bottle to sometime in the 1960’s or 1970’s.
