Wolfburn 318 Small Batch has been crafted from a combination of lightly-peated spirit, matured for a little over seven years in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, and spirit matured for seven years in first-fill Bourbon barrels. These casks produced a sweet, rounded, sumptuous whisky with a peerless depth of flavour. September 2021 was when this, the sixth release in the Small Batch range hit the shelves.
Although still a young distillery, Wolfburn was first established in 1821 in Thurso, on Scotland’s far north coast.
Production ceased in 1850s, with Wolfburn’s new distillery started in 2012 very close to the old site. With production starting in 2013, their inaugural expression was released in February 2016.
They continue to make their whisky the same way it was always made: by hand, using only the finest ingredients, and without haste. Wolfburn’s whisky is distilled, matured and bottled on-site.
- Nose: A blend of sweet fruity aromas—apricot and pear—mixed with light smoke, vanilla, and hints of dried fruits.
- Palate: Creamy and sweet with honey, dried fruits (sultanas), caramel, and cinnamon. Soft, earthy peat smoke emerges alongside subtle oak and nuttiness.
- Finish: Medium-length and warming, leaving a gentle smoke, cinder toffee, and lingering fruitiness.
