The team at Wolfburn Distillery crafted Wolfburn 318 Small Batch by combining a lightly peated spirit, matured for just over seven years in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, with an unpeated spirit matured for seven years in first-fill Bourbon barrels. These exceptional casks produced a sweet, rounded, and sumptuous whisky that boasts a peerless depth of flavour. This expression—the sixth release in the distillery’s acclaimed Small Batch range—first hit retail shelves in September 2021.
Although a young distillery today, founders originally established Wolfburn in 1821 in Thurso, on Scotland’s far north coast. While production ceased in the 1850s, a new team began constructing the modern facility in 2012 very close to the historic original site. Whisky production commenced in 2013, and the distillery launched its inaugural expression in February 2016. The team still crafts its whisky the traditional way: by hand, using only the finest ingredients, and without haste. Today, Wolfburn distills, matures, and bottles every drop of its whisky entirely on-site.
- Nose: A blend of sweet fruity aromas—apricot and pear—mixed with light smoke, vanilla, and hints of dried fruits.
- Palate: Creamy and sweet with honey, dried fruits (sultanas), caramel, and cinnamon. Soft, earthy peat smoke emerges alongside subtle oak and nuttiness.
- Finish: Medium-length and warming, leaving a gentle smoke, cinder toffee, and lingering fruitiness.
