The team at Wolfburn crafted the Wolfburn 177 Small Batch single malt Scotch whisky by combining a spirit matured for eight years in first-fill ex-bourbon hogsheads with a spirit matured for seven years in first-fill Caribbean rum barrels. The resulting whisky delivers a triumphant flavour profile, blending the smooth sophistication of bourbon maturation with the unique sweetness and depth of rum casks.
Although a young distillery today, founders originally established Wolfburn in 1821 in Thurso, on Scotland’s far north coast. While production ceased in the 1850s, a new team began constructing the modern facility in 2012 very close to the historic original site. Whisky production commenced in 2013, and the distillery launched its inaugural expression in February 2016. The team still crafts its whisky the traditional way: by hand, using only the finest ingredients, and without haste. Today, Wolfburn distills, matures, and bottles every drop of its whisky entirely on-site.
- Nose: Roasted figs and prunes meet candied ginger. There’s a terrific depth of flavour with plum sauce and toffee meeting marzipan and sultanas
- Palate: Rum influence shines through with overtones of molasses ever-present. Layers of sweetness unfurl over time, with fruit and honey notes beautifully bound together by silky oak tannins.
- Finish: The finish is sticky, fruity, decadent and delicious.
